THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT
February 23 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm£5
“It’s sad, believe me, when you realize that the distressing things by far overweigh the beautiful things you feel.”
Petra Von Kant (Margit Carstensen) is a successful fashion designer who abandons a sado-masochistic relationship with Marlene (Irm Hermann), her female assistant, in favour of a love affair with Karin Thimm (Hanna Schygulla), a beautiful young woman who wants to be a model. Soon this affair will bring dramatic consequences for Petra Von Kant.
Based on his own play, the director Rainer Werner Fassbinder reflects upon the currents of dominance and submission that lie beneath the surface of any human relationship. The film’s main assets are the exquisitely claustrophobic cinematography of Michael Ballhaus, the extraordinary costumes of Maja Lempke that gives that sense of the superficiality and the superb performances of the all female cast.
★★Think Cinema ★★presents with The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant the second film dedicated to New German Cinema (Neuer Deutscher Film) and the most perfect example of a long feature made purely with a female view. This event is also celebrating LGBT History Month.
